Regeneration of heavily printed, high humidity and highly contami- nated plastic materials with Gamma Meccanica Tandem line
Plastic is one of the world’s most-used materials. Technically sophisti- cated, lightweight and cheap, plastics suit a broad spectrum of uses. The problem with plastic lies not in how it is used, which is generally harmless, but in end-of-life management of products made from it. Recycling is the best solution for processing plastic waste because it limits environmental impact and generates significant socioeconomic gains.
Gamma Meccanica SpA an Italian company specialized in the produc- tion of lines for the regeneration of plastic materials has developed a Tandem series able to recycle a heavily printed, high humidity and highly contaminated plastic materials.
The TANDEM technology guarantees the excellent quality of the gran- ule with a notable energy savings.
The classic line is composed of a COMPAC unit, two extruders arranged in succession, a high performance degassing chamber, two change screens and pelletizer system.
The ultimate Tandem line provides the combination of the first single screw and the second twin screw. This solution allows to have all the advantages of the classic Tandem plus the possibility of give added value to the recycled product, improving its characteristics during the upcycling process. Tandem technology is ideal especially for the pro- duction of compounds from recycled material for special applications. There are numerous advantages for customers who want to rely on it:
the possibility to obtain maximum quality of the recycled product (granules), thus expand production offer, to have improved energy savings and highest safety and automation standards.
The first Tandem model of latest generation, that is currently under construction, will be put into operation at the beginning of the next year.
The machine was purchased by a North American customer who makes polyethylene compounds from different sources (post-con- sumer films, containers, tubes, etc.). The production capacity of the line is between 1200 and 1400 kg / h.
The line is composed of gravimetric dosing system to feed the materials in a more precise and accurate way in the Compac system, a short single-screw extruder for a reduction of the cutting forces (“shear rate”) and stress less the melted material, filtration system, dosing system of melted polymer in the twin screw that grants high additive dosing precision that will take place in that machine, an extra performing degassing chamber already used in the traditional tandem, a twin-screw with 2 or 3 lateral feeding systems and degassing section, in-line control of the viscosity of the material and water ring pelletizer TDA.
The offered technological line give a new high value to the product form waste in the upcycling process, and like other solutions devel- oped by Gamma Meccanica allows to contribute to the protection of the environment, both for the type of application and for better energy saving and minimum environmental impact.
